Clear Out Your Clutter for Some Christmas Spending Money

Christmas is often an expensive time of the year for everyone, especially if you have a large family. Buying gifts is inevitably going to become expensive; this is without considering the various social events in which you will be partaking throughout the festive period. It seems balancing a hectic social schedule and various gift purchases will take its toll on the bank balance for a huge amount of people throughout the month of December.

Slipping into an overdraft facility at your bank can be a useful way to generate those extra funds for Christmas; however this can be expensive if you don’t have a pre-arranged overdraft facility in place. Short term loan companies often charge high rates of interest and may not be the ideal solution for the whole month. Tips on How to Budget Money

We can all use help when it comes to how to budget money. We all know that we need to have a budget so that we can live within our budget and not overspend. We all know it is a necessary evil. So why do so few of us actually do it? Why do so few of us sit down with pen and paper and draw up that budget? I think part of it is that we have a vague idea of how to do it and that it involves a lot of work and drudgery.

A budget also has connotations of being grim and having to cut out things we enjoy. It doesn’t have to be. Once you actually have a budget and know where your money is going it really does make it easier to see how you can save up for the things that you really want. Here are some tips to get you started setting up a budget you can live with.

Sit down with pen and paper. Or computer spreadsheet or whatever means you want to use. Make it neat and easy for you to follow. It doesn’t do any good to use something made by someone else that makes no sense to you. You’ll never use it and it will gather dust with your treadmill. Basically you need headings for income and expenses. You can break those down into smaller and smaller headings as you go on if you feel its necessary.

Identify your Income. What income do you receive over a week/month/year? Do you get paid weekly or monthly. Do you do seasonal work? Does your income vary from month to month? Do you receive dividends from any sources regularly? Not windfalls or hopeful expectations. Pull out last year’s tax returns if that will help.

What do you owe? Figure out what you pay each month for living expenses. Utilities/phone/gas or transportation/groceries/cable/internet/insurance. The recurring monthly expenses that you need to live day to day. Write them down.

Debt. Do you have credit card debt? How much do you need to pay each month?

Break it Down. A monthly budget is probably the easiest to work with as you can reasonably expect to have similar expenses from month to month with fluctuations in gas and utilities depending on the time of year.

Subtract. Now that you know what your income is and your expenses are “all” you have to do is to subtract the expenses from the income and determine what’s left over for savings and entertainment.

Examine. Now that you see where your money is going it might be a good time to reassess what you spend it on. Is there enough left over after paying bills to save towards that concert? Do you really need to pay that much for cable TV? Where can you cut back? Where can you splurge?

This is by no means a comprehensive lesson on how to budget money but some tips to get you started and thinking about where your money goes and what you would really like to be doing with it.

I recently went through debt consolidation and counseling after being laid off. I made a few mistakes before I found a solution that worked the best for me.
